Disability sports classification groups athletes with disabilities according to the type and severity of impairments, so that each athlete competes in a fair environment against competitors with comparable impairments. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) classification scheme in particular has roots in a 2003 attempt to address "the overall objective to support and co-ordinate the ongoing development of accurate, reliable, consistent and credible sport focused classification systems and their implementation." ==Alpine and nordic skiing== Alpine skiing classification is undertaken by the IPC.
